John Zarlengo, East Chicago High School, is the 2017 School Social Worker of the Year. John has worked as a School Social Worker for 35 years. Most recently with East Chicago High School. John is described as hardworking, a leader in his profession, and a positive influence on the culture of his school. He believes every human can change for the better and inspires others to believe in themselves. He supports an environment of acceptance and understanding, which will carry on after his retirement. He was a key member in the Restorative Justice Program and facilitates many necessary groups within the school. John spends time lobbying and advocating for the advancement of school social work. He shares through stories and experiences the need for social work services in schools. John shows unwavering dedication and commitment to the families he serves. He has been a member of INSSWA since inception. He believes in school social work and supports the profession by supervising BSW/MSW students each year.
John has been married to his beautiful wife, Julie Zarlengo, for 37 years. Now that John has retired, they are looking forward to traveling to the Caribbean and spending more quality time with their children and grandchildren. John will keep busy working asphalt for his family business in the warmer months too.
