Text Box: Governor Mitch Daniels has proclaimed March 4 – 10 as School Social Work Week.  In his recent proclamation, Governor Daniels noted that “school social workers in the State of Indiana and across the nation represent a vital link between the school, home and community.”  He further stated that “school social workers provide Indiana’s schools with assessment, counseling, and support services.”  March 4th – 10th has also been declared National School Social Work Week and the poster celebrating this occasion, features Jane Addams. Addams, the first woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, social reformer and pioneer of social work said, “America’s future will be determined by the home and the school.  The child becomes largely what he is taught: hence, we must watch what we teach, and how we live.”  This is as true today as it was in the early 1900’s, and Jane Addams and her work at the Hull House in Chicago continues to be an Text Box: inspiration to school social workers today.              

The Indiana School Social Work Association (INSSWA) is hosting regional meetings throughout the state during February and March to note the occasion of School Social Work Week.  During those regional meetings, Dee Kempson, State School Social Work Consultant from the Department of Education, will be presenting a workshop entitled “Ethics and Standards for School Social Workers.”  This workshop will qualify for the mandatory Ethics Continuing Education Unit (CEU) that all social workers must receive.  

Terry Miller, President of the Indiana School Social Work Association (INSSWA) said, “It is really a great time to be a part of a professional organization like INSSWA.
